Reaching their destination, Levi parked his pickup within walking distance of the arena.

Keeping a firm grip on Seth’s hand so he wouldn’t lose him in the milling crowd, he paused to study the arena where the events were taking place. The scent of soil, manure and anxious animals all mingled together in the air. The evening promised to be pleasant as the sun tipped toward the horizon. In the summertime, the day lingered on until well past eight in the evening.

“Well, what do you think?”

Gail’s smile wavered. “So noisy,” she said. “I can barely hear myself think.”

“It can get pretty crowded,” he said, leading her through the swarm of people gathering around the food and drink vendors. Selling everything from hot dogs and hamburgers to cotton candy and other treats, the booths usually made a killing. There was nothing people liked more than eating as they watched the entertainment unfold.

And Levi loved every minute of it.

“Would you like something to eat?”

Gail started to shake her head, then caught herself. “Yes, I’ll have something.”

“What would you like?”

“I love those big hot pretzels,” she confessed. “I had one at the county fair one time and it was wonderful.”

“Then you shall have one.”

Seth tugged at his shirt. “Can I have some cotton candy?”

Levi mulled his son’s request. Even though he didn’t approve of allowing a child that much sugar so late in the evening, he could hardly deny the kid his favorite treat.

“All right,” he agreed, and led the way to the vendor.

“What color?” the man asked when it was their turn to order.

“Blue!” Seth called, delighted to watch as the man operating the equipment expertly twirled the spun sugar onto a paper cone.

Levi inwardly winced as Seth devoured his treat. No doubt he’d regret it later when his kid was bouncing off the walls.

As he chose a soft drink for himself, Levi’s gaze fell on the people buying harder beverages from other vendors. There was once a time when he was inclined to have an adult beverage. Matter of fact, he and Betheny had bonded over drinks at a party they’d both attended after a particularly intense competition that had seen him walk away with a couple of nice wins.

Leaving the food court behind, Levi couldn’t help but think about Seth’s mother. Her party-girl ways had frequently gotten her in trouble with the law and had, ultimately, been the cause of her tragic demise.

Frowning, he refused to think of the event that had sent his and Seth’s life into a tailspin. He glanced at his son, so cheerful and full of life. Every day he thanked God Seth hadn’t been harmed by her foolish decisions.

“Something wrong, Levi?”

Shaking his head, Levi smiled. “Not at all. Why do you ask?”

“You looked so sad for a moment.”

“It’s nothing,” he said, packing away the memories he found unpleasant. The past was in the past, and there wasn’t anything he could do to erase it. Building a future for Seth was going to be his focus from now on.
